Italy: Bologna mayor refuses to annul overseas same-sex marriages
Despite instructions from the Italian Interior Ministry this morning, the Mayor of Bologna has refused to annul the marriages of gay and lesbian couples entered into abroad.
The city of Bologna began recognising overseas same-sex marriages last month.
Alfano went on to say that marriages between same-sex couples entered into abroad, and which have already been entered into registers by civil authorities must be cancelled and removed.
The Mayor of Bologna, Virginio Merola, has since said he would not follow the instructions, reports Ansa.
He said: “If they want to annul the transcriptions of marriages contracted abroad, let them. I won’t take my signature off…So let them do it but not in the name of Bologna, which I represent. I won’t obey.”
