Morrissey announces he has received treatment for cancer
Morrissey has revealed that he has been receiving treatment for cancer, but that he was not scared to die.
The Smiths singer, who last year revealed that his first serious relationship was with a man, said in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo that he had received several bouts of treatment for cancer.
The 55-year-old said: “They have scraped cancerous tissue four times already, but, whatever.”
“If I die, then I die. And if I don’t, then I don’t. Right now I feel good. I am aware that in recent photos of me I look somewhat unhealthy, but that’s what illness can do.
“I’m not going to worry about it. I’ll rest when I’m dead.”
The singer, has not mentioned cancer before, but who has been known to have had health problems in recent years, cancelled a number of tour dates.
Morrissey is currently on a European tour, but spoke of just finishing his debut novel.
“With luck I will be able to stop singing forever, which would make many people happy,” he said.
“I’m now at an age when I should no longer be making music,” he continued. “Many composers of classical music died at 34. And I’m still here, and nobody knows what to do with me.”
He continued: “I have no social life. No need. I live in quiet solitude. Fun is an artificial construct, and if you have a sex life – and I have none at all – it is impossible to deal with people because people only talk about sex. If you don’t have a partner, people look at you suspiciously.”
