Nick Clegg: Equal marriage is our proudest achievement in goverment
Nick Clegg has hailed same-sex marriage as “one of the biggest, proudest achievements for all of us”.
The Deputy Prime Minister made the comments in his speech to Liberal Democrat party conference in Glasgow this afternoon.
He said: “One of the biggest, proudest achievements for all of us, giving gay couples the same right to marry as everyone else. Designed and delivered by Lib Dems.
“That is an extraordinary record.”
Yesterday, the Liberal Democrats adopted a new equalities policy paper which includes provisions for Gender X passports, and an extension of the Gender Recognition Act to include intersex people.
Proposals in the ‘Expanding Opportunity, Unlocking Potential’ paper would allow for ‘X’ to appear on passports under gender, rather than ‘M/F’.
The paper states: “It is important that the state recognises individuals’ identity in a way that is acceptable to them, but the current system of markers on official documentation requires that people chose to identify entirely as male or female. Some countries, in line with international standards, allow ‘X’ (Unspecified) gender markers on passports and we support the extension of this to UK passports.”
