US: First gay couple weds in ‘God Hates Fags’ church’s home state
The first same-sex weddings have taken place in the home state of the Westboro Baptist Church.
he notoriously anti-gay church, known for their infamous ‘God Hates Fags’ signs, is based in Topeka, Kansas.
Today, a same-sex couple wed for the first time just 60 miles away, in Johnson County, after a district judge struck down a same-sex marriage ban.
Of Kansas’s 105 counties, so far only Johnson County is issuing same-sex marriage licenses – but it is likely the decision will eventualy apply on a state-wide level.
The first couple to marry in the state were Angela and Kelli, 36 and 29, who asked for their last names to not be used.
They told the Kansas City Star: “We’ve just been waiting for Kansas to get on board with marriage equality.
“This is our home state. This is where we live. This is where we pay our taxes. This is where we raise our children.”
“We are hoping that this is a good opportunity for everyone in Kansas to see that we are a normal regular family.
“We are excited that other families will be recognized as regular families now.”
The church is yet to respond to the news.
