Scotland for Marriage says ‘silent majority’ who oppose equal marriage should be respected
Campaigners against marriage equality in Scotland have said the “substantial silent majority” should be respected, despite polls showing only a minority oppose the legislation.
According to The Christian Institute, Scotland for Marriage said: “Many people adopt a viewpoint very much opposed to that of the Holyrood metropolitan elite.
“Of course, our parliament has voted and we accept the outcome of the democratic process.
“[But] there is a substantial silent majority in this country who take and hold different views from our MSPs.
“These people adopt a viewpoint very much opposed to that of the Holyrood metropolitan elite which took the decision to legislate.
“We hope the views of those opposed to this legislation will continue to be respected in the future.”
Scotland was the 17th country in the world to pass same-sex marriage.
56% of Scots supported the legislation going through Holyrood; 35% are opposed, while 8% are unsure.
Writing for PinkNews earlier this year, First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond, explained why the passage of a bill to legalise same-sex marriage in Scotland was “one of the proudest days in the history of Scotland.”
Northern Ireland is now the only remaining UK nation where equal marriage has not been legalised.
