Campaigners against marriage equality in Scotland have said the “substantial silent majority” should be respected, despite polls showing only a minority oppose the legislation.

According to The Christian Institute, Scotland for Marriage said: “Many people adopt a viewpoint very much opposed to that of the Holyrood metropolitan elite.

ā€œOf course, our parliament has voted and we accept the outcome of the democratic process.

“[But] there is a substantial silent majority in this country who take and hold different views from our MSPs.

ā€œThese people adopt a viewpoint very much opposed to that of the Holyrood metropolitan elite which took the decision to legislate.

ā€œWe hope the views of those opposed to this legislation will continue to be respected in the future.ā€

Scotland was the 17thĀ country in the world to pass same-sex marriage.

A poll by YouGov last year showed a majority of Scotlandā€™s population support marriage rights for same-sex couples.

56% of Scots supported the legislation going through Holyrood; 35% are opposed, while 8% are unsure.

Writing for PinkNews earlier this year, First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond, explained why the passage of a bill to legalise same-sex marriage in Scotland was ā€œone of the proudest days in the history of Scotland.ā€

Northern Ireland is now the only remaining UK nation where equal marriage has not been legalised.
