Hong Kong: Unannounced speaker delivers ‘ridiculous’ anti-gay rant at cathedral
A unidentified man delivered an anti-gay rights speech after Saturday afternoon Mass at a Hong Kong cathedral, it has been reported.
According to South China Morning Post, the unannounced speaker at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Caine Road also handed out sample letters to attendees.
A note printed on the letters said the enclosed information was also posted online “for people to copy and paste” and send to the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) to protest proposed revisions to the anti-discrimination law.
“Please do not submit the above words to the EOC,” it adds at the end, and reminds submitters to change the wording slightly in order to reduce the risk of cloned letters being treated as a single protest.
The parishioner who reported the incident said the Chinese began his speech at the end of the service without permission.
The speaker said if the EOC passed its proposed revisions, gay people and their relatives could sue anybody who offended them at any time.
He said the defendants would have to bear “the burden of proof” and “massive legal fees.”
The parishioner added: “I agree some of the proposed revisions might undermine family values, but what he said is just too ridiculous.
“He even said that in America, men can enter female toilets as long as they claim they are women, because transsexual people’s rights are recognised.”
