Azerbaijan: 19-year-old slit her sister’s throat after finding out she was a lesbian
Police in Azerbaijan have arrested a 19-year-old who says she was possessed by “a demon” when she killed her lesbian sister.
Parvana Nuriyevanin, 19, stabbed her sister Günel Nuriyevan, 20, before slitting her throat after a struggle, Aznews reported.
The incident took place at their home in the capital city of Baku.
Parvana told police: “She often came home with lesbians and slept with them in our mother’s bed. When I found out about it, I asked her to stop, but she did not.
“A demon possessed me and told me in my dreams that the time had come to kill my sister. I couldn’t bear it.”
Police said had been charged her with the murder of her older sister “of a sexual minority.”
LGBT Azerbaijan Alliance has called the incident “a hate crime against LGBT people.”
The investigation continues.
Although homosexuality was decriminalised in 2001, oppression and harassment of LGBT people in the Muslim country is thought to be widespread. There are no legal provisions for same-sex unions and no laws protecting LGBT citizens from discrimination.
