NUT praises Nicky Morgan over £2 million anti-LGBT bullying fund
The National Union of Teachers (NUT) has welcomed Nicky Morgan’s announcement of a £2m fund to help schools tackle bullying against LGBT students.
The Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities made the announcement today to PinkNews where she also expressed regret on not voting for same-sex marriage.
Organisations will be able to bid for grants from the fund in order to provide anti-bullying services to schools.
Mrs Morgan said: “Having the fund in order to allow people to bid in to use the best practice, and to spread the initiative across the schools system, and working with young people is really important.
“In these difficult times, we’ve got some money and we are going to put it into the fund.”
Commenting on the announcement, NUT General Secretary Christine Blower said: “The NUT welcomes the funding set aside by government for schools to use to tackle homophobic bullying. The NUT endorses the research findings by NatCen which recommends that training and whole school policies are in place to deal with such important issues.
“Many schools are already doing good work on this and much high quality material has been published for teachers to use. The funding announcement today should be the landmark for further ring-fenced funding to support young people who experience devastating bullying.”
