Watch: Conchita Wurst performs at the United Nations
Eurovision drag diva Conchita Wurst has today performed for the United Nations, and met with Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
The Austrian singer – who took home the crown at Eurovision this year despite a homophobic backlash across Europe – performed a set in early October at the European Parliament in Brussels, as part of a non-discrimination event.
Not to be outdone, the United Nations invited Wurst to perform at the UN Headquarters in Vienna today in front of a crowd of delegates, press and the Secretary General.
Mr Ban Ki-Moon pledged at the event to continue to fight against homophobia and transphobia, adding: “This year I extended benefits to same-sex partners of UN staff members. Discrimination has no place in the United Nations.
“When I heard that she won this Eurovision song contest I immediately knew that she was a star of the world.”
Quoting the star’s Eurovision victory speech, he added: “I stand strong for equality. We are unstoppable.”
Conchita Wurst told the crowd: “You just can be respected if you respect others.”
She added that she dreamed about “a future where we don’t have to talk about sexual orientation or the colour of your skin.”
