US: Many Missouri counties not issuing marriage licences to gay couples
Despite a ruling yesterday striking down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, many counties in Missouri are not issuing marriage licences to gay and lesbian couples.
The ruling was made on Wednesday by St Louis Circuit Judge Rex Burlison.
He wrote in the ruling “that any same-sex couple that satisfies all the requirements for marriage under Missouri law, other than being of different sexes, is legally entitled to a marriage licence.”
Despite that couples in St Louis were issued marriage licences immediately after the ruling, other counties were advised that the ruling does not apply outside of that county.
Officials in Jackson, Boone, Cole, Greene, Miller, Osage and Jasper counties have said they are not issuing marriage licences to same-sex couples.
While no stay has been requested by the state to block the ruling, the attorney general said he intends to appeal.
