US: Missouri same-sex marriage ban struck down
A ban on same-sex marriage in the US state of Missouri has been declared unconstitutional.
The ruling was made on Wednesday by St Louis Circuit Judge Rex Burlison.
He wrote in the ruling “that any same-sex couple that satisfies all the requirements for marriage under Missouri law, other than being of different sexes, is legally entitled to a marriage licence.”
Same-sex couples began obtaining marriage licences immediately after the ban was lifted.
According to reports, the mayor of St Louis Francis Slay, and ACLU members were on hand to assist couples wishing to marry.
While no stay has been requested by the state to block the ruling, the attorney general said he intends to appeal.
