US: Clay Aiken making reality series about failed bid for congress
Gay American Idol singer-turned-politician Clay Aiken bombed at the polls this week – but he will star in his own documentary series instead.
Mr Aiken, who came out as gay in 2008, was bested by Republican Renee Ellmers in North Carolina this week, ending his dream of becoming a congressman
However, he has revealed that a documentary reality series will be released chronicling his failed bid, airing on cable channel Esquire.
The four-part series will follow the Democrat during his time on the campaign trail, from announcing his candidacy in February to his eventual loss.
Matt Hanna of Esquire said: “Ultimately, this series is a raw and honest look at American politics through an incredibly unique and compelling candidate.
“The opportunity to work with amazing documentarians Simon and Jonathan Chinn gave Esquire Network the perfect opportunity to explore politics and its intersection with celebrity.”
Film-maker Simon Chinn added: “We were granted incredible access during the making of this documentary, and in turn were able to capture the internal workings of an American campaign – the good, the bad and the ugly.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Esquire Network, who are tackling topics that are not only popular and entertaining but also smart and thoughtful.”
Mr Aiken said: “It has not dampened my desire to continue to use my voice for people whose voices are not being heard. My voice is not going to be silenced by this, my voice is only going to get louder.”
He caused controversy in September when he claimed celebrities who take naked pictures of themselves “deserved” to have them leaked.
He said: “Anybody who takes inappropriate pictures of themselves deserves exactly what they get.
“Of course whoever [stole and released the photos] should be hogtied. It’s unfortunate that we don’t have Internet security right now or the laws in place to protect people from pirating that stuff.”
