Ireland: Colin Farrell backs ‘Yes’ campaign for equal marriage referendum
Irish actor Colin Farrell has voiced his support for the ‘Yes’ campaign ahead of the country’s upcoming referendum on equal marriage.
The Republic of Ireland, which introduced civil partnerships in 2011, is set to vote next May on extending civil marriage to same-sex couples, with early polls suggesting a landslide victory for equality.
However, referendums have a history of unpredictability in the country, due to a combination of low turnouts and powerful religious lobbies.
The deadline for voter registration ahead of the ballots is this month, November 25 – with equality groups heading a drive to register young and disenfranchised voters ahead of the poll.
Minority Report star Colin Farrell – one of Ireland’s best-known actors – has today voiced his support for the campaign, posing with a ‘Yes Equality’ sign,
The campaign said: “Colin Farrell pitching in his support this week for YesEquality and the register to vote campaign. Ask your friends to check us out today.”
Others to back the drive include Ireland’s Taoiseach (Head of Government) Enda Kenny, and Fianna Fáil leader Michael Martin.
There are currently no plans to introduce same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland.
