Scotland: Dundee pensioner banned from golf course after alleged homophobic remark
A man in Dundee has been suspended for a year from the city’s golf courses after allegedly making offensive anti-gay remarks.
According to the Evening Telegraph, 75-year-old William Webster was speaking to a teenage girl working at Caird Park Gold Club about lesbianism.
Mr Webster said he asked the member of staff how she got on with another woman connected to the club, before informing her the woman was a lesbian and married.
When the girl said she was aware of the situation, Mr Webster added: “Well I hope there’s no tampering with you.”
He told the Evening Telegraph: “I don’t have anything against homosexuals. I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong. The conversation kept on going so the girl wasn’t upset about it.”
The same evening, he was visited by two police officers who told him of his suspension.
He said: “The next morning I phoned the golf membership office and asked for clarification. They advised that they had no knowledge of any suspension and I was free to play.
“That afternoon, as me and my friends limped around the course, we were approached by the golf manager who said he was investigating a complaint.”
He added he received a letter two weeks later advising him he was excluded from using council golf facilities for 12 months.
A spokesman for Leisure and Culture Dundee said: “Our staff should not have to face abuse or intimidation of any kind. We do not tolerate this sort of behaviour.”
