You’d be surprised what party supporters actually think about same-sex marriage
Only half of UKIP supporters continue to oppose same-sex marriage, polling data has shown.
A YouGov survey into the views of supporters of political parties uncovered data suggesting that people who vote for UKIP are increasingly at odds with some of the party’s right-wing members.
The data found that just 51 percent of the party’s supporters remain opposed to equal marriage – with 39 percent now in favour.
Same-sex marriage has the support of the majority in all other parties, however, with 77 percent of Lib Dems, 68 percent of Labour voters and 53 percent of Conservatives in favour.
Marriage equality is opposed by 35 percent of Tories, 21 percent of Labour supporters, and just 14 percent of Liberal Democrats.
The data shows a surprising opposition among Labour voters, with one in ten “strongly” opposed to same-sex marriage – possibly partly due to the party’s strong Catholic vote.
David Coburn, UKIP’s only MEP in Scotland, recently claimed same-sex marriage is “false bollocks” concocted by “equality Nazis” for “queens”.
He said in part: “What you’re doing with the gay marriage issue is you’re rubbing people’s noses in the dirt.
“When you go across the road to pick a fight with someone of faith, that’s not got anything to do with it, that’s the equality Nazis trying to give Christianity a jolly good kicking. You know it, I know it, we all know it – it’s false bollocks, the lot of it.
“It’s just for some queen who wants to dress up in a bridal frock and in a big moustache and dance up the aisle to the Village People.”
UKIP candidate David Little, who is running for Parliament in Dover, recently posted a map to his Facebook branding Londoners “cosmopolitan poofters”.
