Dara Ó Briain backs marriage equality ahead of Irish referendum
Dara Ó Briain has backed the equal marriage voter registration campaign, ahead of Ireland’s upcoming referendum.
The Republic of Ireland, which introduced civil partnerships in 2011, is set to vote next May on extending civil marriage to same-sex couples.
The deadline for voter registration ahead of the ballots is this month, November 25 – with equality groups heading a drive to register young and disenfranchised voters ahead of the poll.
Irish comedian Dara O’Briain has spoken up to back the campaign, posing with a sign from Yes Equality.
He tweeted: “Whatever your opinion, don’t lose your voice! One week left to register to vote @YesEquality2015.”
Yes Equality added: “The brilliantly funny @daraobriain takes his voting seriously!”
American actress Anjelica Huston also voiced her support, saying: “Please register to vote in the important referendum in Ireland next year for Gay Civil Marriage.”
The pair follow others including Colin Farrell, who also spoke out to back the campaign last week.
The actor said: “The fact that my brother had to leave Ireland to have his dream of being married become real is insane. INSANE.
“It’s time to right the scales of justice here.
“To sign up and register to vote next year so that each individual’s voice can be heard.
“How often do we get to make history in our lives? Not just personal history. Familial. Social. Communal. Global. The world will be watching. We will lead by example. Let’s lead toward light.”
