The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue backs equal marriage ahead of Ireland referendum
Singer Danny O’Donoghue has shown his support for equal marriage in Ireland, ahead of the country’s planned referendum.
The Republic of Ireland, which introduced civil partnerships in 2011, is set to vote next May on extending civil marriage to same-sex couples.
The deadline for voter registration ahead of the ballots is next Tuesday, November 25 – with equality groups heading a drive to register young and disenfranchised voters ahead of the poll.
Today the former Voice coach joined the ‘Yes Equality’ campaign, alongside The Script bandmate Mark.
The campaign said: “Thank you Danny for showing your support. Join Danny and #registertovote so that you can have your say!”
He is the latest of a string of celebrities to support the campaign, following comedian and TV host Dara Ó Briain.
Dara Ó Briain said earlier this week: “Whatever your opinion, don’t lose your voice! One week left to register to vote @YesEquality2015.”
Actor Colin Farrell spoke out to back the campaign last week.
The actor said: “The fact that my brother had to leave Ireland to have his dream of being married become real is insane. INSANE.
“It’s time to right the scales of justice here.
“To sign up and register to vote next year so that each individual’s voice can be heard.
“How often do we get to make history in our lives? Not just personal history. Familial. Social. Communal. Global. The world will be watching. We will lead by example. Let’s lead toward light.”
There are currently no plans to introduce same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland.
