Family of late wife to sue Shrien Dewani for not telling them that he ‘was bisexual or gay’
The family of Shrien Dewani’s late wife have said in an interview that they intend to sue him for reasons including the fact that he didn’t tell them he had slept with men before he married their daughter.
Mr Dewani is standing trial in South Africa, accused of arranging a plot to kill his wife Anni during their honeymoon.
Care home owner Dewani was in 2011 extradited from the UK to face trial for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice. Prior to that, he was treated in hospital for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The court previously heard that he is bisexual and slept with male prostitutes.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Mail, Vinod and Nilam Hindocha have said they intend to pursue civil action against Shrien Dewani, regardless of his trial’s outcome.
Saying the proposed legal action was not financially motivated, Vinod described the £200,000, which he contributed towards, a “drama and false”.
This is the first time the couple have spoken out during the trial, which Mr Dewani has asked to be thrown out.
Mr Hindocha said he would not sue Mr Dewani “for money but for the loss of my daughter who left this world for nothing.”
He continued: “It was a false wedding because of who he really was… Anni would never have married Shrien if she knew the truth that he was bisexual or gay. She would never have accepted it.
“We never had any idea that he was or had been sleeping with gay prostitutes.
“I would have cancelled the wedding and I am sure Anni would never have got married to him if she had known the truth about him… I feel he has been dishonest over his sexuality. He has lied to us and he cheated on her with other men.”
They couple said they did not want to appear homophobic or biphobic.
