Grassroots Conservatives: David Cameron won’t win a majority in 2015 due to same-sex marriage
The Chairman of Grassroots Conservatives says David Cameron’s support for same-sex marriage means the party “has little chance of winning a majority at the general election”.
Bob Woollard accused the Prime Minister of “alienating” his loyalists and handing the keys to UKIP.
He claimed supporters were still upset at the legalisation of same-sex marriage, and called for new laws to “protect those who believe in traditional marriage”.
He told the PM: “I am personally convinced that the Conservative Party has little chance of winning a majority at the general election unless you reach a sensible accommodation on this subject and draw people back who have gone to UKIP or have no intention of voting at all.”
Mr Woollard outlined his fears in a letter to the PM on 13 October. He has yet to receive a response.
The Daily Mirror reports Mr Woollard said: “We’ve had no reply to that letter, not a phone call. People say to me, ‘Why do you bother?’ We bother because we represent a large number of people in the country.”
Writing exclusively for PinkNews in March on the weekend of the first same-sex marriages in England and Wales, the Prime Minister said: “Stability and happiness is immeasurable. That is not something that the State should ever deny someone on the basis of their sexuality. When people’s love is divided by law, it is the law that needs to change.”
