Sir Elton John to marry David Furnish next week in ‘low-key’ ceremony
Sir Elton John is expected to marry his partner David Furnish next week, in a “small and intimate” ceremony.
The veteran singer entered into a civil partnership with Furnish in 2005, and the pair are fathers to sons Zachary and Elijah.
The couple had originally intended to marry in May this year – but were forced to postpone their wedding after they became aware that couples were not yet able to convert from civil partnerships.
The final regulations governing the conversion of civil partnerships came into effect in England and Wales on December 10, finally allowing all same-sex couples the chance to marry.
Sir Elton is reportedly not wasting any more time waiting for his conversion – with a “small and intimate” ceremony planned for next Sunday, December 21 on the pair’s Berkshire estate.
A source told the Mirror: “Elton and David have been planning this for months.
“Elton is flamboyant but, for once, this will be a decidedly low-key affair. Only close friends and family are invited – it’s going to be a small, intimate do.”
The 50 people reportedly invited is far less than the 650 who attended the star’s civil partnership reception exactly nine years before – on December 21, 2006.
Sir Elton, 67, lambasted the government for the delay this summer, saying: “I think the government kind of messed that one up. We can’t do it until next year.
“However, when we do do, it will be very quiet and off the cuff – we had our big shebang when we had our civil union.”
