Elton John and David Furnish to marry this weekend
Sir Elton John and his civil partner David Furnish are set to convert their civil partnership to marriage this weekend.
The veteran singer entered into a civil partnership with Furnish in 2005, and the pair are fathers to sons Zachary and Elijah.
They confirmed to Us Magazine on Wednesday that they will be tying the knot this weekend.
Sir Elton said: “We’ll do it very quietly. But we will do it and it will be a joyous occasion and we will have our children [there]. For this legislation to come through is joyous and we should celebrate it. We shouldn’t just say, ‘Oh, well, we have a civil partnership, we’re not going to bother to get married’. We will get married.”
The children are expected to act as ringbearers at the ceremony.
The couple had originally intended to marry in May this year – but were forced to postpone their wedding after they became aware that couples were not yet able to convert from civil partnerships.
The final regulations governing the conversion of civil partnerships came into effect in England and Wales on December 10, finally allowing all same-sex couples the chance to marry.
Sir Elton is reportedly not wasting any more time waiting for his conversion – with a “small and intimate” ceremony planned for next Sunday, December 21 on the pair’s Berkshire estate.
The 50 people reportedly invited is far less than the 650 who attended the star’s civil partnership reception nine years before – on December 21, 2006.
Sir Elton, 67, lambasted the government for the delay this summer, saying: “I think the government kind of messed that one up. We can’t do it until next year.
“However, when we do do, it will be very quiet and off the cuff – we had our big shebang when we had our civil union.”
