President Obama wears princess tiara
US President Barack Obama has been snapped wearing a sparkly tiara, while meeting a girl scout troop earlier this year.
The President donned the tiara during a meeting with Girl Scout Troop 2612 from Tulsa, Oklahoma – presumably in a bid to break down gender stereotypes.
Though the meeting took place in June, White House photographer Pete Souza only made it public this week, while working on a photo project for the President.
He wrote on Instagram: “Still editing 2014 Year in Photos. I may include this one even though it’s a posed photo.
“This is from the annual White House Science Fair. The kids from Girl Scout Troop 2612 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, convinced the President to wear a tiara with them for their group photo.”
The choice of headwear has attracted attention online – with some Republicans mocking the President for agreeing to wear the tiara.
It’s not the first time Obama has sought to break down gender stereotypes – while sorting toys at the annual Toys for Tots Christmas drive this month, he placed a number of science and sport-related toys in the ‘girl’ pile.
Putting a basketball in the ‘girl’ pile, he said: “I just wanna make sure some girls play some ball.”
When considering a tetherball, he told the crowd: “T-Ball? Girls like T-Ball too… I’m just trying to break down these gender stereotypes.”
