Queen bestows New Year Honours on LGBT rights trailblazers
The Queen has bestowed honours on four LGBT rights campaigners in her New Year Honours list.
Among those given awards this evening was the founder of gay rights group Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (FFLAG), Jenny Broughton.
The 80-year-old, who co-founded FFLAG, was given an MBE in the awards. Broughton helped set up FFLAG two decades after her daughter came out as gay at age 17, and was among those who campaigned against Section 28.
Another LGBT rights campaigner, Nigel George Warner, was awarded an MBE for services to the international movement for lesbian and gay rights. Warner is ILGA-Europe’s Council of Europe adviser.
Also honoured with an OBE was Dr Jay Stewart, who is co-founder of Gendered Intelligence and chairs the Board of Directors. Dr Stewart was honoured for his service to the transgender community.
Activist Jenny-Anne Christine Bishop was honoured with an OBE for services to the trans community.
The Queen also bestowed a Damehood on Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy who became the first lesbian holder of the post in 2009.
