US: Florida Attorney General asks for ‘clarification’ on same-sex marriage
The Attorney General in the US state of Florida has asked for “appropriate clarification” on whether a ruling on same-sex marriage applies state-wide.
Pam Bondi on Monday filed a legal response to US District Judge Robert Hinkle who earlier this year ruled that Florida’s same-sex marriage ban was unconstitutional.
Hinkle had stayed his ruling, but declined to extend the stay which expires on 5 January. Some counties have been expected to start issuing marriage licences to same-sex couples on that date, but it is unclear whether the ruling applies state-wide or just to one county.
Bondi’s response did not assert an opinion, but just asked for Hinkle to “provide appropriate clarification.”
“This court is best situated to determine the reach of its own order,” Solicitor General Allen Winsor wrote on behalf of Bondi.
