Ellen Page: ‘F**k that’ to Queen for giving MBE to anti-gay politician
Actress Ellen Page has sworn at the Queen, for giving an honour to a homophobic DUP politician.
In the New Year’s Honours list, the Queen awarded an MBE to Northern Irish Councillor Maurice Mills, who blamed the spread of AIDS in Africa on gay people engaging in the “filthy practice of sodomy”.
The councillor also claimed that the 2005 Hurricane Katrina – which killed 1,300 people – was “God’s revenge” for an annual Pride event held in New Orleans.
Juno star Ellen Page – who came out as a lesbian in an emotional speech last year – tweeted her anger at the Monarch, over the controversial award.
She tweeted a news article about the honour, writing: “‘The Queen honoured a politician who blamed Hurricane Katrina & AIDS on LGBT people’ (…) fuck that”
The Queen also bestowed honours on four LGBT rights campaigners in her New Year Honours list.
Among those given awards this evening was the founder of gay rights group Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (FFLAG), Jenny Broughton, who was awarded an MBE.
Another LGBT rights campaigner, Nigel George Warner, was awarded an MBE for services to the international movement for lesbian and gay rights. Warner is ILGA-Europe’s Council of Europe adviser.
Also honoured with an OBE was Dr Jay Stewart, who is co-founder of Gendered Intelligence and chairs the Board of Directors. Dr Stewart was honoured for his service to the transgender community.
Activist Jenny-Anne Christine Bishop was honoured with an OBE for services to the trans community.
The Queen also bestowed a Damehood on Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, who became the first lesbian holder of the post in 2009.
