Archbishop tells employees they will be fired for supporting same-sex marriage
The Archbishop of Miami has sent a letter to his employees telling them they could be fired for publicly supporting same-sex marriage.
Despite Florida recently seeing its first legal same-sex marriages, Catholic Archbishop Thomas Wenski has warned his workers that the church still opposes same-sex marriage.
The letter said: “Whatever the role in which you serve within the Archdiocese, you publicly represent the Catholic Church and the Archdiocese in everything you do and say. Therefore, it is important that you understand the Church’s position and are well informed.
“Certain conduct, inconsistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church, could lead to disciplinary action, including termination, even if occurs outside the the normal working day. Employees should exercise discretion when posting on social media sites.”
The Archdiocese also released a statement condemning the recent court decision to allow same-sex marriages:
“How society understands marriage has great public significance. Because of this, redefining civil ‘marriage’ to include two persons of the same sex will have far-reaching consequences in society.
“Such a change advances the notion that marriage is only about the affective gratification of consenting adults. Such a redefinition of marriage does nothing to safeguard a child’s right to a mother and father and to be raised in a stable family where his or her development and well-being is served to the greatest extent possible.”
The first same-sex couples in Florida married on Monday. Catholic bishops in the state said that it threatened their religious freedom.
