LGBT groups attack ‘downright irresponsible’ TV show about ‘ex-gay’ Mormons
LGBT groups has laid into a documentary about gay Mormon men who have married women to try and live as heterosexuals.
The TLC series ‘My Husband’s Not Gay’ airs this month, and follows four men living in Salt Lake City, Utah, who are all members of the anti-gay Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
However, LGBT groups are not impressed with the show – which LGBT media charity GLAAD claims is damaging and dangerous.
GLAAD boss Sarah Kate Ellis said: “This show is downright irresponsible. No one can change who they love, and, more importantly, no one should have to.
“By investing in this dangerous programming, TLC is putting countless young LGBT people in harm’s way.”
Josh Sanders of Virginia Beach – who launched a petition signed by over 90,000 people calling for the show to be axed – claims it “promotes the false and dangerous idea that gay people can and should choose to be straight in order to be part of their faith communities”.
He says of his own experiences: “I was promised I could change, and told that I should ‘pray the gay away’.
“In the end, the only thing that this so-called ‘therapy’ did was stoke a growing despair that maybe my life wasn’t worth living.”
TLC responded in a statement: “TLC has long shared compelling stories about real people and different ways of life, without judgment.
“The individuals featured in this one-hour special reveal the decisions they have made, and speak only for themselves.”
