US: Kentucky judge grants divorce to gay couple
A judge in the US state of Kentucky has granted a divorce to a married lesbian couple, despite that the state does not recognise same-sex marriages.
The ruling was made by Judge Joseph O’Reilly at Jefferson Family Court, and is believed to be the first ruling of its kind in the state.
The couple, Alysha Romero and Rebecca Sue Romero, were legally married in Masachsetts.
It was argued by lawyers that the couple should not have to move back to another state in order to end their marriage, and should be allowed to divorce in Kentucky, where they now live.
According to Judge O’Reilly’s ruling, he would violate a guarantee in the state constitution that all people should be treated equally.
