Al Murray to run for Parliament against Nigel Farage
Al Murray has announced he will stand for Parliament against UKIP leader Nigel Farage in South Thanet.
Mr Farage – who leads the UK Independence Party – has repeatedly defended the party from allegations of homophobia, despite a string of gaffes involving UKIP politicians.
However, the politician – often seen in pubs with a beer in hand – will have competition in May – when he goes up against Al Murray’s famous Pub Landlord.
The comedian announced this week that his most character would face off against Mr Farage in South Thanet, currently held by Conservative Laura Sandys.
Mr Murray – who is running for the fictional Free the UK (FUKP) party – said: “It seems to me that the UK is ready for a bloke waving a pint around, offering common sense solutions.
“That is why I am here to announce my intention to run for election as member of parliament for the constituency of South Thanet.
“Let it be known, like many of the parliamentary hopefuls in the upcoming election, I have no idea where South Thanet is. But did that stop Margaret Thatcher from saving the Falkland Islands? No.”
PinkNews asked Mr Murray’s spokesman to clarify his stance on same-sex marriage and gay rights, but he declined to comment.
In 2009, Al Murray was criticised for playing a gay Nazi in ‘Al Murray’s Multiple Personality Disorder’ – and later claimed the skit caused the show’s cancellation.
