Michael Sam proposed to his fiancé at the Vatican
Gay NFL star Michael Sam has revealed that he got engaged to fiancé inside Vatican City.
The football star – who became the first openly gay NFL player during brief spells with the St Louis Rams and the Dallas Cowboys – announced his engagement to boyfriend Vito Cammisano earlier this month.
He has now revealed that the pair actually got engaged in the heart of the Catholic church – on the roof of St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
It comes the week that Pope Francis attacked same-sex marriage, saying those who support it are attempting to “disfigure God’s plan for creation”.
Speaking at a mass in Manila, Pope Francis warned that the family is “threatened” by people who want to ““redefine the very institution of marriage”.
Michael Sam posted a picture of himself down on one knee in front of Cammisano – who he met at the University of Missouri – writing “@vitcamm thank you for making my 25th birthday a very special one.”
The pair have posted a number of photos from their trip to Europe, visiting London, Madrid and Rome.
