ABC making sitcom about Dan Savage’s life
ABC has ordered a comedy pilot about the life of gay activist Dan Savage.
The controversial rights activist – who is popularly known for his sex advice column Savage Love – could be the basis for a new sitcom, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Casting is yet to be announced, but if it does well, the pilot could be picked up for a full series order.
The synopsis says: “It centres on a picture-perfect family that is turned upside down when the youngest son comes out of the closet.
“What seems like the end of their idyllic life turns out to be the beginning of a bright new chapter when everyone stops pretending to be perfect and actually starts being real.”
David Windsor and Casey Johnson of ‘Don’t Trust the B’ are writing the script, with Savage signed on to produce.
It is not the first foray into TV for Savage – who created the It Gets Better project.
He previously co-created It Gets Better specials for MTV, with husband Terry Miller, and fronted short-lived sex education show Savage U.
Savage – who has come under fire for controversial comments about bisexuality and transgender people in the past – claimed in December that anti-gay Republican Michele Bachmann’s husband is a “closet case”.
He said: “Marcus Bachmann is the photo negative of the guy on the last bar stool in the gay bar, drinking and smoking himself to death, except instead of destroying himself, he’s destroying other vulnerable queer people in an effort to destroy the queer inside himself.”
