Michael Urie hits back at claims there’s too much gay sex on TV
Actor Michael Urie has hit back at Billy Crystal’s claims that there is “too much” gay sex on TV.
Last week, Billy Crystal said that he doesn’t want TV to “shove it in our face” with regards to gay issues, adding: “Sometimes, it’s just pushing it a little too far for my taste”.
He later clarified his comments, claiming: “What I meant was that whenever sex or graphic nudity of any kind (gay or straight) is gratuitous to the plot or story it becomes a little too much for my taste.”
However, Ugly Betty star Michael Urie – who has previously said he identifies as queer – hit back at the claims.
He told NewNowNext: “I don’t think it’s overexposed. If gay sex on TV is too much for you, change the channel and don’t watch it, it’s not for you.
“I think there is far too much online casino football on TV. But I’m not going around saying they should take football off the air; I’m changing the channel.”
Crystal played one of the first regularly openly gay characters, Jodie Dallas, on 1970s comedy ‘Soap’.
Russell T Davies said last week: “There is not enough male frontal nudity on TV… You’re far more likely to see a naked woman than a naked man.
“It’s only [seen as] rude because the rest of television is rather tame – it doesn’t actually talk about sex and our bodies and how we feel about them. I’m not out to shock.”
