James Blunt defends ‘joke’ about dropping the soap near David Cameron
James Blunt has defended making a joke about ‘dropping the soap’ near David Cameron and Boris Johnson.
The singer was responding to a satirical New Statesman cover, which showed Blunt with the two Conservatives, Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch and Chris Martin.
He tweeted a crude joke about anal sex, writing: “I won’t be picking up the soap when this party moves to the showers.”

Rights campaigner Peter Tatchell attacked the joke, telling the Mail: “It would be helpful if James could explain what he meant by those words and make it clear he is not homophobic.”
A Stonewall spokesperson added: “Although James might have been joking, it’s this sort of language that perpetuates negative stereotypes around gay men and gets deemed as acceptable as it becomes ingrained in society.”
However, Blunt defended his comments, writing: “And in today’s PC news, jokes about public school boys rogering each other are OFF! Even if we did.”
