Urban Outfitters sells tapestry reminiscent of gay concentration camp uniform
Urban Outfitters has caused controversy for selling a tapestry resembling the uniform worn by gay men in Nazi concentration camps.
The striped tapestry features a pink triangle that appears similar to the triangle used to identify gay men in the Nazi camps.
From 1933 to 1945 the Nazis arrested up to 100,000 gay men and the death rate for gay prisoners in the camps was 50%.
The Anti-Defamation League is urging Urban Outfitters to remove the tapestry from its stores.
ADL National Director and Holocaust survivor Abraham H Foxman said: “Whether intentional or not, this gray and white stripped pattern and pink triangle combination is deeply offensive and should not be mainstreamed into popular culture.
“We urge Urban Outfitters to immediately remove the product eerily reminiscent of clothing forced upon the victims of the Holocaust from their stores and online.”
In April 2012 Urban Outfitters sold a t-shirt with the yellow Star of David but the company withdrew it, saying it was never meant for sale.
