Rainbow flag flies in Guernsey for Valentine’s Day
The Channel Islands LGBTQ group Liberate is flying a rainbow flag to mark Valentine’s Day.
The group – which was formed one year ago today to lobby for same-sex marriage and LGBTQ rights on the Islands – hoisted the flag from Weighbridge roundabout in St Peter’s Port.
As crown dependencies, the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey maintain autonomy from the UK – and unlike England, Wales and Scotland are yet to introduce same-sex marriage.
Martin Gavet, the chair of Liberate, said: “Our Valentine’s wish is for Equal Love.
“Love is love regardless of who you are. We seek love equality. All couples who love each other should be treated equally and without discrimination.
“This means being able to marry the person you love no matter what your sexuality or gender identity.
“We very much welcome the fact that both the States of Guernsey and Jersey are seriously looking into introducing Equal Marriage or Union Civile and afford the same rights to same-sex or transgender couples that are currently enjoyed by our heterosexual friends.
“Flying the rainbow flag symbolises hope for the future in terms of the Channel Islands being truly free and equal societies.
“We have come a long way in 12 months building bridges and friendships across the community from government to faith leaders.
“Liberate has truly become a catalyst for change across the Channel Islands.”
