David Cameron meets with Sultan of Brunei, who wants gays stoned to death
Prime Minister David Cameron is today meeting with the Sultan of Brunei – who recently enacted a law calling for homosexuals to be stoned to death.
The Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah passed a change to his country’s penal code last April, which states that gays should be stoned to death.
Despite the controversy, the Prime Minister is today spending the day with Sultan at Chequers – his official country retreat – for talks about the relationship between Brunei and the UK.
A Downing Street spokesperson said that no topic would be “off the table” between the pair, including Brunei’s human rights record.
The spokesperson said: “We have an ongoing and long relationship with Brunei we have and a defence relationship there for a number of years.
“As part of our discussion and close relationship we engage on a number of issues.”
The group known as Islamic State, which has itself performed a number of high-profile executions, is expected to be the main focus of the meeting.
The spokesperson told the Mirror: “The point with this is you want to build support across the world with a range of different countries with different ethnic backgrounds and different political viewpoints.
“We need to work together to tackle this poisonous ideology and defeat these Islamist extremists that are waging terror in a number of different countries.”
One of the lots at the party’s auction was “a stay for two, to include breakfast in the Michelin starred restaurant, at the famous Park Lane Dorchester Hotel” – which is owned by Brunei.
