Italian university to give trans students option of ‘aliases’ to protect privacy
An Italian university has announced that it plans to give transgender students the option of using an online ‘alias’ to borrow books from the library or register for exams.
The Naples Federico II University said students would be able to use the aliases to avoid having their privacy violated.
It means students who are awaiting legal name-change documentation would not be forced to use their birth name for official purposes, reports Ansa.
In terms of catering for the needs of trans students in Italy, the change will set the university ahead of its competitors.
The measure was first adopted by the University’s senate in 2010, in principle, after a student awaiting approval by the authorities of their gender reassignment, and legal name change.
Federico II is the world’s oldest state university and one of the oldest academic institutions in continuous operation.
