Catwoman comes out!
Comic book character is confirmed as bisexual in the latest issue of Catwoman.
Batman’s nemesis and love interest, Selina Kyle, in recent issues of her comic book has hung up her catsuit in order to become a mob boss. In the latest comic, she meets the woman who has taken over her Catwoman alterego – and kisses her.
Writer Genevieve Valentine wrote about the storyline on her blog, saying: “She’s flirted around it – often quite literally – for years now; for me, this wasn’t a revelation so much as a confirmation.
“Was it a surprise for them? In terms of their sexualities, not particularly; certainly it’s no surprise to Selina that she has an attraction to a woman. Is this particular kiss a surprise? It’s definitely surprising; this is the very last thing you’re supposed to be getting into on the brink of war, and they both know it.
“While I don’t want to spoil what can’t yet be spoiled, please be assured that Selina’s longstanding connection to Batman has not been forgotten; that is not how bisexuality (or humanity) works. Selina doesn’t care easily, but when she does care it strikes deep, and there will be plenty of that coming up.”
DC Comics, who publish the Catwoman comics, have come under fire previously for prohibiting a lesbian wedding for Batwoman. They claimed it was because heroes should not have “happy personal lives“. Two writers quit in protest.
They have also attracted criticism for hiring anti-gay writer Orson Scott Card for Superman.
In 2013, a character in the Batgirl comics came out as a trans woman.
