Republican Rand Paul: I’m offended by same-sex marriage
Rumoured Presidential candidate Rand Paul has claimed he finds it “offensive” to refer to same-sex marriage as same-sex marriage.
Senator Rand Paul is considered a contender for the Republican nomination in 2016, topping a straw poll of potential contenders at the CPAC conference.
The Kentucky Senator made the controversial comments in a Fox News interview with Bret Baier.
He said: “I’m for traditional marriage. I think marriage is between a man and a woman.
“Ultimately, we could have fixed this a long time ago if we just allowed contracts between adults.
“We didn’t have to call it marriage, which offends myself and a lot of people.
“But I think competing contracts that would give them equivalency before the law would have solved a lot of these problems and it may be where we’re still headed.”
Despite his claims, the Republican party has long opposed not just same-sex marriage, but also any form of civil union that recognises same-sex couples.
Rand Paul is the son of former Republican and Libertarian candidate Ron Paul, who has unsuccessfully run for President in 1988, 2008 and 2012.
