Republican Rand Paul: Same-sex marriage is the result of a ‘moral crisis’
Rumoured Presidential candidate Rand Paul has claimed that same-sex marriage has come about due to a “moral crisis” in the US.
Senator Rand Paul is considered a contender for the Republican nomination in 2016, topping a straw poll of potential contenders at the right-wing CPAC conference.
The Kentucky Senator – who earlier this month claimed it was offensive to refer to same-sex marriage as same-sex marriage – made the controversial comments ahead of a private prayer breakfast with religious laders.
He said: “Don’t always look to Washington to solve anything. In fact, the moral crisis we have in our country, there is a role for us trying to figure out things like marriage, there’s also a moral crisis that allows people to think that there would be some sort of other marriage.
“There’s a role outside and inside government, but the exhortation to try to change people’s thoughts has to come from the countryside, from outside Washington.”
He continued: “We need a revival in the country… we need another great awakening.”
Rand Paul is the son of former Republican and Libertarian candidate Ron Paul, who has unsuccessfully run for President in 1988, 2008 and 2012.
He said previously of equal marriage: “We didn’t have to call it marriage, which offends myself and a lot of people.
“But I think competing contracts that would give them equivalency before the law would have solved a lot of these problems and it may be where we’re still headed.”
Despite his claims, the Republican party has long opposed not just same-sex marriage, but also any form of civil union that recognises same-sex couples.
