Anti-gay marriage MP tells lesbian voter: ‘Don’t bother me again’
A Tory Parliamentary Candidate who whilst sitting as an MP, voted against same-sex marriage has told a lesbian constituent to “never bother me again”, after she said she would not vote for him.
Stewart Jackson, the Tory candidate for Peterborough, replied to a letter from constituent Laura O’Sullivan, who wrote to him to say she had now married her same-sex partner, that her name had changed, and because Mr Jackson opposed same-sex marriage, she would not vote for him in the upcoming election.
Mr Jackson, who was among 175 MPs who voted against the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill in 2013, replied to say “the feeling’s fully mutual”.
Laura O’Sullivan wrote:
Dear Stewart Jackson,
You sent me a letter, I wish to inform you that it was sent to the wrong name, Hawes is my maiden name. As of last October I am happy to say I am married, And have therefore changed my surname to O’Sullivan.
And as my Wife and I enjoying our rights to an equal marriage, something that you did not support we will not, in no un certain terms, be voting for you.
Please never write to me again.
Mrs Laura O’Sullivan
Mr Jackson responded:
The feeling’s fully mutual.
Please feel free to never bother me again.
Yours
Stewart Jackson
