Tom Daley signs up to replace Zayn Malik in One Direction
Tom Daley has given up on his diving career, to become the fifth member of One Direction.
The ‘Splash’ star – who came out in 2013 – will reportedly take the slot in the boyband vacated by Zayn Malik, who quit the band last month.
Daley, 20, was discovered by One Direction manager Paul Higgins belting out ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ in the shower following a diving competition – and was approached with an offer to join the band full time.
The Olympian-turned-pop star was overheard telling a close friend: “I’ve felt for a long time that diving just wasn’t the right way to go for me… I needed something with more creativity.
“I’ve had plenty of training to help keep up with the group’s synchronised routines, which should be great for their live shows.
“Me and [boyfriend] Dustin have been fans for a long time. I have a bit of a crush on Harry, so I’m looking forward to working with him!”
Daley will be the first openly gay member of the band. His first performance with the group will be at their concert in Agloe, New York on April 31.
Tom previously told MTV News about his desire to join the band, saying: “I’d probably have to say One Direction but I can’t sing or dance, so in another life I’d have to have a few more musical genes…”
However, he has since taken singing lessons – and been assured by the band’s management that he can take advantage of autotune technology.
An insider source said: “It won’t be a problem… some of the other boys have barely sung a note in tune for years!”
Existing band member Niall Horan is said to be furious with the line-up change.
The source added: “Niall has always got by on being the cute one… but now Tom’s coming on board, he’s worried he won’t get any of the spotlight.”
The diver is thought to have made the choice after his ITV diving competition ‘Splash!’ was axed.
