Paper company makes wedding confetti out of recycled anti-gay leaflets
A paper company in Ireland has started making wedding confetti out of homophobic leaflets opposing same-sex marriage.
Daintree Paper, a handmade paper shop in Dublin, has launched the campaign ahead of the country’s referendum on same-sex marriage on May 22.
Extreme anti-gay leaflets have been distributed by groups ahead of the referendum, with some claiming that being gay will give you cancer, and equal marriage “exposes” children to the “sounds of Sodomy”.
In reaction to the deluge of leaflets, Daintree have begun to offer a special service – shredding the anti-gay literature and re-purposing it as wedding confetti for same-sex couples.
The company has appealed to members of the public to forward them any homophobic literature they receive, with the proceeds from the confetti sales going to campaign group Yes Equality.
An ad states: “We believe in making beautiful things out of paper. So when paper was used to print some ugly lies in the run up to the marriage equality referendum, we wanted to do something about it.
“We want to collect any negative and dishonest fliers, leaflets and online literature – and recycle them into something positive, with all proceeds going to Yes Equality.”
“Whenever ugly lies are printed… we’ll make beautiful confetti.”
The ad is an about-face from the store’s previous stance, with the owner in 2013 removing same-sex cake toppers citing his Catholic beliefs.
Last month, students in the country were urged to call their elderly relatives and ask them to vote for same-sex marriage – as the elderly are more opposed to equality.
