The amount of money raised to support this homophobic pizzeria is disgusting
Donations to support a homophobic pizzeria the owners of which said they’d refuse to serve a gay wedding has reached almost a million dollars.
The owners of Memories Pizza in Walkerton, Indiana had said they would use the newly passed Religious Freedom Restoration Act to refuse to serve pizza at a gay wedding. Crystal O’Connor said: “If a gay couple was to come in and they wanted us to provide pizzas for their wedding, we would have to say no.
“We are a Christian establishment… we’re not discriminating against anyone, that’s just our belief and anyone has the right to believe in anything.”
They were inundated with negative reviews online, and say they were forced to close due to threats.
However a GoFundMe page was set up, which has now raised $842,442 (£566,000) in a space of just five days.
Two anonymous donors gave $5,000 (£3,300) to the fund, which will be transferred directly to the family.
The reason for the fundraising is listed as: “To relieve the financial loss endured by the proprietors’ stand for faith… After you donate please go “like” and combat the leftist hatred expressed on Dana’s page.”
Lawmakers in Indiana last week reached an agreement to update the law in order to specifically protect LGBT people from discrimination.
Scrubs stars Zach Braff and Donald Faison also offered to make pizza for same-sex weddings in the state, after a pizzeria declared it would use the new anti-gay law to turn away orders from gay weddings.
