Musical gay wedding nominated for BAFTA
‘Our Gay Wedding: The Musical’ has been nominated for a BAFTA.
The Channel 4 show celebrated the introduction of same-sex marriage last March, by featuring the actual wedding of grooms Benjamin Till and Nathan Taylor, sung live.
The show – which was narrated by Stephen Fry and featured appearances from newsreader Jon Snow and singer Andy Bell – acted as a camp celebration of the first same-sex weddings, as 2013’s Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act came into effect.
The show has been nominated for a BAFTA Television award in the ‘Specialist Factual’ category – which puts it up against documentary ‘The Great War: The People’s Story’ as well as shows from David Attenborough and Grayson Perry.
The pair, who have been together for 13 years, have a strong background in musical theatre, as Till is a composer and Taylor has previously appeared in West End shows including Les Misérables.
The awards ceremony is set to take place on May 10 next month, with Graham Norton set to host.
Norton’s own chat show, The Graham Norton Show, is up for the Comedy and Entertainment Programme award, while Netflix’s prison comedy-drama Orange is the New Black is among the international nominations.
Missing from the nominations are Cucumber, Banana and Tofu – pioneering LGBT shows created for Channel 4 by Russell T Davies – which will be eligible for BAFTAs in 2016 as they aired after the nomination period closed.
