This gigantic mural is encouraging people in Ireland to vote yes to equal marriage
A gigantic mural of a same-sex couple has appeared in Dublin, ahead of Ireland’s referendum on equal marriage.
The Republic of Ireland is set to vote on May 22 on a proposal to introduce civil same-sex marriage.
Just over a month before the vote, Irish artist Joe Caslin has painted an enormous mural above Rick’s Burgers in the city of Dublin to express his support for the measure.
Mr Caslin told the Journal that the mural – which is on the side of a four-story building in the centre of Dublin – was a “poignant representation of same sex love in the city”.
He also said he was looking for another building elsewhere in Ireland for his next work, adding that it is “not just a referendum for the capital”.
The men in the mural are wearing a traditional Irish Claddagh ring, which represents friendship, loyalty and love. When worn on the left hand with the heart pointing towards the wrist, as in the mural, the ring represents marriage.
He has previously installed art on buildings across Ireland in Cork and Limerick.
Last month, Irish vlogger Riyadh Khalaf posted a video in which he let his mum read his Grindr messages – racking up nearly 2 million views.
After receiving abuse from the Westboro Baptist Church, he posted another video in which he called the group to ask how to get into heaven.
