Marco Rubio would attend a same-sex wedding even though he’s against them
The presidential candidate said he would go to the same-sex wedding of a family member if he was asked.
Republican Senator Marco Rubio recently announced his intention to run for President of the United States.
Asked by Fusion TV host Joge Ramos if he would attend the wedding of a family member or a member of his campaign team, if they were marrying someone of the same sex, he said: “If there’s somebody that I love that’s in my life, I don’t necessarily have to agree with their decisions or the decisions they’ve made to continue to love them and participate in important events.
“Ultimately, if someone that you care for and is part of your family has decided to move in one direction or another or feels that way because of who they love, you respect that because you love them.
“I’m a member of the Catholic faith that teaches, for example, that divorce is wrong. If someone gets divorced, I’m not going to stop loving them or having them a part of our lives.”
Asked for his views on same-sex marriage recently, Senator Rubio said: “I’ve not, for example ever supported a federal constitutional amendment to define marriage because I believe states define marriage in their laws. If in fact people feel that way, as that poll says, then they can petition the state legislature to change the law.
“There is still a significant number of Americans that believe that the definition of marriage should be that of one man and one woman as it has been for thousands of years.”
A spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee said in a statement: “What did Rubio conveniently leave out? That in Marco Rubio’s ‘new American century’ he actually wouldn’t be able to attend gay weddings in states that ban gay marriage, because in Marco Rubio’s America they wouldn’t be legal in the first place.
“Rubio’s ‘new’ policies in fact turn back the clock for LGBT Americans and erase the progress we have made. Not so new after all.”
In 2013, Senator Rubio said that businesses should be able to fire people for being gay.
