Gay fans upset after Madonna praises Margaret Thatcher
Madonna has caused controversy among her gay fans for praising Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher – who passed Section 28 and opposed LGBT rights.
The late Conservative PM remains controversial among LGBT people for passing Section 28 – which banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in schools, as well as for her approach to the AIDS crisis.
Thatcher’s former Health Secretary, Lord Norman Fowler, told PinkNews last year that Baroness Thatcher warned him against becoming the “minister for AIDS” due to his work on HIV/AIDS.
However, pop singer Madonna seemed unaware of the controversy she was wading into when she posted a picture of the former PM on Instagram, with the caption: “Thank you Margaret Thatcher! #unapologetic <3 #rebelheart”
After criticism, the gay icon swiftly deleted the post.
Some of her fans wrote:
Who saw the ill informed Madonna/Maggie Thatcher image quote on her Instagram this AM? Bad shout. So much cringe.

I always did think of Madonna as Thatcher in a pointy bra. Now we have proof. https://t.co/W1sJlLJOHy

Madonna deleted an instagram post praising Margaret Thatcher. Might want to avail of the “rent-a-spine” business that Thatcher once proposed — Niall (@niallBADERg) April 20, 2015
Madonna posting IG photos in praise of Thatcher, then swiftly deleting them. What a wrong’un. — Lauren Martin (@codeinedrums) April 20, 2015
However, she appears to have won back a fan – in the form of former Tory MP Louise Mensch.
The ex-MP wrote: “Madonna back in my good books.”
Madonna back in my good books. #Thatcher
