Sam Smith: I’m more affected by being called ‘fat’ than being called a ‘faggot’
Pop star Sam Smith has opened up about his relationship with food, saying he would be more affected by derogatory comments about his weight, than about his sexuality.
The Stay With Me singer opened up in an interview with 60 Minutes, saying he was “controlled” by food, and that he ate during emotional periods.
“From a young age food has controlled me…When I was at school and wasn’t having a great time or when music wasn’t going very well. I would eat, eat. Eating would make me feel better; when I felt lonely, I would eat,” he said.
He went on to say: “If someone called me fat, that affects me way more than someone calling me a faggot,” he noted. “I think just because I’ve accepted that, if someone calls me a faggot, it’s like, I am gay and I’m proud to be gay so there’s no issues there. But if someone calls you fat, that’s something I want to change.”
The ‘Stay With Me’ singer came out as gay publicly last year, when he revealed his album was about a man he fell in love with – but has been out in his private life since he was a young boy.
