DUP candidate denies his canvasser told woman: ‘Sorry you’re gay’
A DUP general election candidate has denied that one of his canvassers told a woman “sorry to hear you’re gay”.
Candidate Sammy Wilson denied claims made by the woman in Jordanstown, in the East Antrim constituency, about his canvasser.
The woman said she informed the canvasser that she is a lesbian, and wouldn’t be voting for the DUP in the election on 7 May.
She told the Times: “Livid isn’t even the word! It’s a disgrace that those representing a politician would be so bigoted.”
However after the incident was mentioned by a member of the Alliance Party on Twitter, Mr Wilson denied the claim.
According to Mr Wilson, the canvasser simply told the woman “sorry to hear that”, and said she had sworn at him.
The DUP candidate said his canvasser had responded with “the standard reply”.
The woman has said she plans to make an official complaint to the DUP.
